3 January 2012 Off to work with Philip Treacy!

I have been lucky enough to have been offered a three month contract for the one and only Philip Treacy! For those of you who don’t know him, he made 36 hats for the royal wedding (including ‘that hat’), a diamante lobster for Lady Ga Ga, numerous pieces for the late Isabella blow, a lace mask for Grace Jones…the list goes on. As you can imagine I am very excited. I shall be traveling up to London in a few days to start work on collections in the run up to London and Paris fashion week.

I sadly will be unable to take on any commissions during this time but I will be happy to respond to any enquirers. My hen parties will run as normal and if for any reason I cannot come to Cornwall one weekend then Annalise Harvey will take the reigns. Annie is a couture wedding dress designer maker with 10 years experience within the costume industry including making tiara’s and head dresses for ballet so you can be rest assured you will be in beautifully experienced hands.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

….wish me luck, Holly

2 December 2011 Pea Pods a Plenty!

On Monday 28th November it was ‘Team Day’ at Atelier Millinery. I am now a guest tutor so I was kindly invited up for a day of making fun!
We had the honor of Bridget Bailey teaching us how to make her trade mark straw pea pod head pieces.
There were six milliners including Bridget, so there was plenty to talk about and share. We had lots of cake over the course of the eight hours, not to mention tea (followed by champagne)!
We first learned how to roll the straw into a point. Easy you might think but we spent two hours practicing on little triangles of straw first before we attempted our pod shape. The peas are made from wooden and paper beads then covered in fabrics of our choice and strung up on a wire. I am not going to give away too many of Bridget’s secrets so I’ll just show you our end results!
I think you will agree they are rather fun!

Bridget runs millinery classes at Atelier Millinery, from her studio and at Kensington & Chelsea College. Look up these website for more details.

25 November 2011 Off to London to Atellier Millinery

I am going by Great British Rail once again to our capital city to further my quest in Millinery knowledge.
First stop is the christmas ‘Craftacular’ at York Hall, Bethnal Green, where my university friend ‘Miss Millinery’ aka Amy Johnson will be selling her vintage style head wear, amongst many other talented crafters.
Then on Monday I am taking part in our ‘Team Day’ at Atellier Millinery (where I am a guest tutor on the ‘fascinator recipe’ course). Top milliner Bridget Bailey will be teaching us how to make fantastic pea pod shaped head bands -out of sinnimay I believe!! soo excited! She is a really respected milliner who teaches many workshops throughout the year so I feel very lucky to be spending a fun day with her and other like minded milliners. I shall upload some photos and keep you informed of how it call goes!

13 November 2011 A letter from Prince Charles

I was very shocked and surprised last week when I received a personal letter from the Prince of Wales.
I had written to him in September expressing my gratitude for setting up his charity The Prince’s Trust. The Trust supports young entrepreneurs in the UK to set up their business, in the way of training, mentoring, loans and grants. I have been lucky enough to receive all four, without which I may not have been able to fulfill my dream of becoming an independent Milliner with my own business.
I explained this to His Royal Highness along with a couple of pictures so he knew what I was talking about. I was delighted to read that he thought they ‘look stunning’ and that he will show them to his wife!
How exciting!

20 October 2011 Fashion Insider – Millinery part 2 for WED magazine

I’m back with more insider Hat news! It’s been a while since my last post as I have been busy with commissions and shooting my new collection (pictures from that to come!).

My correspondent on the London fashion week front line Lucy McCormack took these pictures of Noel Stewart’s collection. Noel takes inspiration from contemporary art and architectural structures. He creates statement pieces with flair and imagination that are real works of art. His C.V includes making the headdresses for the Kyle Minogue Showgirl tour and lecturing at the Royal College of Art.

As well as making his own collection Noel and his team some how found the time to make hats for the labels Erdem and Roksanda’s S/S 2012 collections.

For Erdem Noel made delicate lace boaters worn tilted towards the front of the head. They complemented lace dresses and floral trench coats worn by the models. Made from a thin frame with the lace pulled taught over it and sewn skillfully in place.

For Roksanda Noel made chunky knitted berets in an array of punchy colours.
My personal favorite is the pink. Although creating high impact on the catwalk these hats are totally wearable. I want one in every colour to go with my entire wardrobe.

Other trends cropping up for S/S 2012 are over sized, wide-brimmed hats, straw boaters, western style with a floppy brim, berets and hats with ears –just for fun!

Headonism

Headonism was the main focus for hats this fashion week. It was a celebration of modern millinery curated by the infamous Stephen Jones.
Those taking part were J Smith Esq (AKA Justin Smith from my last post), Soren Bach, Little Shilpa, Noel Stewart and Piers Atkinson.

Selected head wear from the designers was wittily displayed on a rotating carousel made from giant hat boxes. Styles from all the designers were showcased together in an inspiring display of colour, form and texture. I advise you to watch the video to get the full effect:

Quotes from the Headonism Press release:

Curator Stephen Jones said “Headonism is London in a hatbox. The UK has always produced and trained the world’s most exciting milliners, and the capital is a city that thrives on youth and invention – it’s a perfect cocktail for exciting hat design and a constant source of inspiration both for me, and all those taking part. It has been a lot of fun to work on, and by supporting our young milliners we are creating a legacy for the future of the British hat industry.”
On receiving the sponsorship, participating milliner Piers Atkinson said, “This is a great opportunity for me and I’m incredibly grateful for the exposure, but more importantly, I feel that this event signifies a recognition that dressing up is coming back into fashion, and where millinery finally becomes more about having fun rather than the obligatory weddings and funerals.”

Piers Atkinson made witty neon light head dresses for the assistants at somerset house, which spelled out ‘London’ . I also saw his creations in the concessions area of Topshop on Oxford street. This just goes to show that cutting edge design can be accessible to the masses.

This exhibition really shows how millinery is coming back and in a big way! We saw it earlier in the year with the royal wedding and Stephen Jones has been flying the flag for British millinery with his V&A exhibition ‘Hats an Anthology’ which has gone on tour round the world. It’s a really exciting time to be a milliner and indeed a hat wearer!
